The gift of giving

The festive season represents warmth, love and compassion – and what better way to embody this than through the spirit of giving?

Taking time to create thoughtful gifts with your children will add a personal touch to your celebrations while bringing joy to both givers and receivers. We’ve come up with a few ideas for homemade, affordable gifts that the entire family can enjoy making together.

1. Handmade cards: Get some plain cardboard paper from the craft store and let your children unleash their creativity with doodles and heartfelt messages.
2. Biscuit jars: Layer the dry ingredients for a biscuit recipe in a glass jar. Decorate the jar lid and include written baking instructions. Or bake up a batch and let the kids decorate the biscuits!
3. Festive candles: Melt wax crayons (or get a gel candle kit from the craft store) and allow the kids to choose essential oil scents. Use festive moulds for uniqueness – and remember, mom and dad need to do the melting!
4. Painted flowerpots: Let the children paint clay pots, fill them with flowering plants, herbs or veggies and a handwritten note.
5. Recipe books: Compile a book of treasured family recipes, handwrite them together, and let the kids decorate with stickers or illustrations.
6. Photo frames: Get a few plain frames and some glue from the craft store. Let the kids collect shells on the beach and glue them to the frame in interesting patterns.
7. Jewellery boxes: Buy a simple hardboard jewellery box from the craft store, along with some sparkly beads and let the kids make a one-of-a-kind gift. You can also do this with photo frames.
8. Fridge magnets: Cut a hardboard sheet into shapes, use a few layers of decoupage to stick on images and glue a little magnate to the back.
9. Unique chocolates: Get some silicon moulds (cute shapes are a must) at the baking shop, gently melt chocolate and create your own personal bouquet of chocolates.
10. Hot chocolate kits: In a mason jar, layer cocoa powder, marshmallows, and sprinkles. Seal with ribbon and instructions for a delicious hot chocolate.
11.DIY soap bars: Use soap bases to let children mix colours and fragrances, and pour into fun festive moulds.
12. Beaded jewellery: Pop around to your local bead shop for all the supplies you need for a beautifully crafted bead bangle or necklace.
