Every year on 27 April, we pause to remember the extraordinary sacrifices our struggle heroes made to secure the democracy we cherish today.
Freedom wasn’t free – it came at an immense cost as South Africa’s liberation heroes endured imprisonment, torture, exile, and death to dismantle apartheid. Former President Nelson Mandela spent 27 years behind bars, while thousands of others paid the ultimate price with their lives. Many lived for decades in exile, separated from family and homeland.
These brave men and women sacrificed their comfort, careers, and often their lives so that each of us could vote, live freely, and pursue our dreams without racial barriers.
Paying it forward
Here are five meaningful ways we can each pay it forward and honour their memory and sacrifices:
Vote in every election – exercise the hard-won right they died for. Your vote validates their struggle and shapes our democracy’s future.
Mentor young South Africans – share knowledge, create opportunities, and invest in the next generation.
Champion social justice – stand against inequality and discrimination wherever you encounter it.
Learn and teach our history – keep their stories alive by learning about our liberation heroes and sharing their legacies with family and friends.
Unite communities – foster unity and understanding between different groups to continue building a united, non-racial society – our unique Rainbow Nation.
