We celebrate Youth Month in June and our colleague, Dorothy Buthelezi, Senior IT Systems Analyst at AfroCentric Tech has a special message for the youth.
Every year, on the 16th of June, we commemorate the courage and sacrifice of the youth of 1976. While we rightly honour their contribution and the role they played in shaping our nation’s history, I believe Youth Month is also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of all generations of young people who have come after them.
Since 1976, young people have continued to make remarkable contributions in many areas of society. From education and healthcare to business, technology, leadership, sports and community development, countless young people have overcome challenges, broken barriers, and created opportunities for themselves and others. Their victories, achievements and resilience are worth celebrating.
As we commemorate Youth Month, we must do more than reflect on the past. We must embrace the same spirit of courage, determination and transformation that inspired the youth of 1976. Every generation faces its own challenges and the youth of 2026 are no exception.
Living in a digital era
My message to you is simple: know who you are and understand what you stand for. Identify the challenges and limitations that stand before you and have the courage to confront them. At the same time, prepare yourself for the future by developing yourself intellectually, emotionally, mentally, psychologically and spiritually.
We are living in the era of digital transformation. Technology is rapidly changing the workplace, industries, economies and the way we live our daily lives. These changes bring both challenges and opportunities. It is therefore important for you to stay informed, remain curious, conduct your research and understand the shifts taking place around you. Take time to assess where you are, discover your purpose and identify your path. Position yourself strategically for the future by acquiring relevant skills, embracing lifelong learning and adapting to change. The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.
Remember, the future is bright. Opportunities are waiting for you. Your generation has the potential to make an impact, solve problems and shape a better world for those who come after you.
As we celebrate Youth Month, let us honour the past, embrace the presentand prepare confidently for the future.Happy Youth Month 2026!
