A time of new beginnings
As we embrace the arrival of spring, I trust this message finds you energised!

Much like the season’s renewal, our magazine is undergoing a transformation of its own, rebranding as AfroScenes.
Thank you to everyone who enthusiastically embraced the challenge of finding a name that resonates with our diversity and spirit as a company. Don’t miss our special feature detailing the exciting journey we embarked on to find our new name.
In this issue, we tackle several significant health observances, including breast cancer awareness, World Heart Day, mental health and the risks associated with vaping. It is crucial to recognise that breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women globally and heart disease stands as the leading cause of death worldwide.
Our commitment to spotlighting health issues also extends to healthcare professionals, as evidenced by our special feature on World Pharmacists Day and a glimpse into the life of one of our bursary beneficiaries pursuing a pharmacy degree.
Join us also in celebrating our beautiful nation in our Heritage Day article and find out more about how traditional medicine can complement modern healthcare. South Africa boasts a rich diverse heritage, including a treasure trove of wisdom and potential in traditional healing methods.
AfroCentric and partners successfully displayed to the Minister of Health how partnerships can yield tangible results in the fight to eradicate the epidemics plaguing our country.
Community investments remain at the heart of our mission as AfroCentric. Read about our collaboration with SABCOHA and the DeBeers Group – how we joined forces to provide vital health screenings for 25 000 community members and workers of the Venetia Mine and Vhembe and Capricorn Districts in Limpopo. In a showcase event held at the Musina showgrounds, AfroCentric and partners successfully displayed to the Minister of Health how partnerships can yield tangible results in the fight to eradicate the epidemics plaguing our country.
Closer to home, we take pride in launching Mommy Rooms for our breastfeeding moms in the very important month that is reserved for commemorating women. In celebrating women, we also sponsored the Mail and Guardian Power of Women initiative, through an event that celebrated ordinary women in our country doing extraordinary things and a montage of names of all the phenomenal women within our organisation. Lastly, we stand in awe of Hunadi Madisha, Alternative to Hospital Case Manager at GEMS, who conquered Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak in July.
Keep sharing your stories, which continue to inspire us as we celebrate the diverse talents and achievements within our organisation. Together, we weave the vibrant tapestry of AfroScenes making our company a truly unique and extraordinary place to work.
May the beauty and revitalising spirit of spring energise us as we journey together through the final few months of 2023.
Happy reading,
Palesa
