Close to the chest

October marks World Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a crucial time when communities worldwide unite to raise awareness about this devastating disease that affects millions of women globally.

In South Africa, breast cancer represents the second most common cancer amongst women, with approximately one in 29 South African women developing the disease during their lifetime. According to the National Cancer Registry, breast cancer incidence rates in South Africa vary significantly across different population groups, with urban areas often showing higher rates than rural communities.

Early detection is key

Early detection remains the cornerstone of successful treatment, yet many South African women face barriers in this regard, including limited access to healthcare facilities, cultural stigmas, and insufficient awareness about screening programmes.
