A brighter day

Even in times of adversity, all of us still have hopes and dreams – and none more so than courageous children battling chronic and sometimes life-threating disease. Addressing his birthday celebrations in 1997, former President Nelson Mandela said we all have a practical responsibility to ensure that our sick children are cared for in the family and community.

The GEMS Case Management team brightened the day of children at Marang House in Johannesburg, contributing food, cleaning materials and a special gift for each child and employee.

The team also spent a fun-filled day playing football with the children, who all face serious illness.

Marang House provides a nurturing home environment for children between the ages of four and 14, empowering them to learn while also managing their illnesses. The children face serious health conditions that require continuous monitoring and specialised treatments at a tertiary hospital. Marang accommodates up to 12 children, offering not only essential provisions like clothes, housing and food, but also around-the-clock medical care. Importantly, the caregivers also ensure that the children’s education remains a priority by bringing them to the hospital daily, where they receive disease management training alongside traditional schooling.
