AfA remains the HIV management leader
Aid for Aids (AfA) was the first HIV disease management programme rolled out to medical schemes in South Africa. Now, after more than 23 years, it is widely recognised as the industry standard, both locally and internationally.
A subsidiary of the AfroCentric Group, AfA is shaped by more than 23 years of expertise and clinical research. It exists to enable people living with HIV to lead healthy, productive lives. This intention is in line with AfA’s core purpose of enhancing the quality of life to enable us to be healthier together.
From prevention and patient care to treatment and medicine delivery, AfA takes care of the people on the programme. For people living with HIV, good health is ensured by coordinating all care needs, including emotional support and access to top healthcare providers.
Focus on optimal health
AfA focuses on ensuring that the health of the beneficiaries registered on the programme remains optimal, while also providing an excellent patient experience, as this ultimately impacts their health outcomes.
To do this, AfA takes a carefully crafted approach that includes the application of clinical expertise, authorisation of appropriate treatment, analysis of clinical data, the means to influence health-seeking behaviour, as well as easily accessible case managers who are trained to assist beneficiaries with the practical and psychological needs that form part of the patient journey.
It’s a uniquely comprehensive and high-quality service to individuals living with HIV, underpinned by a commitment to providing affordable access to care and treatment, which is so critically needed.
Success to celebrate
Since its inception, AfA has supported more than 400 000 medical scheme members, uninsured employees (through workplace programmes) and a public-private partnership with the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and a nongovernmental organisation.
The policies are supported by a clinical committee comprising South Africa’s leading HIV clinicians. AfA supports healthcare partners who need assistance with the management and prescribing of HIV treatment according to clinical best practice and the latest guidelines.
Its approach has always been to act as a partner to doctors, laboratories, pathology laboratories, pharmacies, funders and beneficiaries, ensuring that a scientific, measurable approach is taken to balancing and aligning each of our stakeholders. This also ensures that patients receive the right treatment at the right time and at the right place.
Once again, AfA received the PMR Diamond Award in the Disease Management category for 2021 – an achievement of which it can be exceptionally proud, as it demonstrates the company’s commitment to transforming healthcare by continuously enhancing service.
