The power of one, for the good of millions
In May, delegates from the AfroCentric Group took part in the 22nd annual Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) Conference in Cape Town. The BHF enables industry discussion on emerging issues and inspires innovation as well as honest conversation about what’s next.
This conference is one of the largest healthcare conventions on the continent, attended by a wide demographic of delegates representing hundreds of organisations from various countries. We connected with many different speakers from around the world and spent four days engaging on crucial challenges facing the healthcare system. This provided a special opportunity to refocus healthcare on the patient, which is its heart.
This year’s conference theme, “Convergence to a person-centric health ecosystem – leaving no health citizen behind”, emphasised the importance of collective efforts and shared values.
Some of our leaders went the extra mile and contributed immensely to the agenda by facilitating sessions and presenting case studies. Dr Hleli Nhlapo of DENIS, Fezeka Nompumza, Dr Wayne Riback and Dr Ayanda from Medscheme played an active role at the conference and kept our flag flying high.
The Group received a request for articles from the BHF, and three articles were provided that featured in the BHF360° magazine:
- Dr Nkateko Msimeki – Digital health: “Screening trends”
- Dr Abongile Qamata – Seeing patients differently: “Delivering a patient-centred healthcare model”
- Vukosi Sambo & Andrew Wright – Educating members: “Do we have their attention?”
A high five to all colleagues!
In true BHF tradition, industry changemakers were honoured at the prestigious Titanium Awards, which are part of the four-day conference activities. Medscheme came out tops – again – for the Best Integrated Report. Bonitas was announced as the winner of the Service to Membership Award in Category B, Polmed won Service to Membership in Category A, and GEMS was commended for having the Best Large Stand.

Another accolade was the Young Achiever Award presented to Dr Vuyane Mhlomi, co-founder and CEO of Quro Medical, our home-based care programme partners.
The BHF Conference is never complete without the AfroCentric BHF Conference Dinner. This annual event afforded us the opportunity to again network, mingle and entertain our clients and important stakeholders. Hosted by the AfroCentric Group CEO, Ahmed Banderker, and Board Chairperson, Dr Anna Mokgokong, the event was also attended by the Deputy Chairperson, Joe Madungandaba, Chair of the Social and Ethics Committee, Dr Nkateko Munisi, and Exco members.
