That\u2019s why AfroCentric embraced National Disability Rights Awareness Month from 3 November to 3 December as an opportunity to reaffirm how we accommodate our differently abled employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We strive to ensure our differently abled employees enjoy easy access to facilities and an improved working environment, and we consistently create employment opportunities for differently abled individuals. In fact, 3.4% of our total headcount comprises differently abled employees \u2013 a strong indication of the Group\u2019s commitment to having a diverse and inclusive workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re always looking for ways to make the working lives of employees who have any form of disability as easy as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is a disability?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"605\" src=\"https:\/\/newmediacreative.co.za\/afrocentric\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/disability1-1024x605.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmediacreative.co.za\/afrocentric\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/disability1-1024x605.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newmediacreative.co.za\/afrocentric\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/disability1-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmediacreative.co.za\/afrocentric\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/disability1-768x454.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newmediacreative.co.za\/afrocentric\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/disability1.jpg 1396w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disabilities can encompass several things, including vision and hearing impairment, autism spectrum disorders, mental health conditions, progressive chronic conditions and physical and intellectual disabilities.&nbsp;Remember that a disability might not be immediately obvious \u2013 such as diabetes or bipolar disorder \u2013 but that doesn\u2019t make it less of an issue for the person experiencing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/newmediacreative.co.za\/afrocentric\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PHOTO-2022-11-25-10-36-37.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newmediacreative.co.za\/afrocentric\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PHOTO-2022-11-25-10-36-37.jpg 640w, https:\/\/newmediacreative.co.za\/afrocentric\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PHOTO-2022-11-25-10-36-37-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newmediacreative.co.za\/afrocentric\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PHOTO-2022-11-25-10-36-37-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/newmediacreative.co.za\/afrocentric\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PHOTO-2022-11-25-10-36-37-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meet Bashimane Phokojoe<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bashimane, a Leave Administrator in AfroCentric\u2019s HC Shared Services Capacity Planning division, is partially sighted due to a condition known as keratoconus, which affects the cornea of his eyes. Bashimane has been working with the AfroCentric Group since July 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Q: <\/strong><strong>What do you think the business should do to better cater for differently<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>abled employees?&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A: Communicate with differently abled employees to find out how they can be accommodated in their workplace and use this information to cater for future employees who may join.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Q: <\/strong><strong>What do you think employees and your colleagues could do differently<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>or conti<\/strong><strong>nue doing<\/strong><strong> to<\/strong><strong> improve the workplace for<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>differently<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>abled employees? <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A: Ask differently abled employees about the areas they have to access in case it\u2019s necessary to update the building and workstations. Colleagues shouldn\u2019t be afraid to build relationships with their differently abled colleagues. They should be patient with them. If you speak to them about their disability, they will probably open up to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Q: <\/strong><strong>Have you disclosed your disability to the business, and how did <\/strong><strong>this<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>help <\/strong><strong>you?&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A: Yes, I disclosed my disability to the business. They got me a bigger screen and IT assisted with computer configurations to accommodate my eyesight. The struggle I face is when allocated a workstation that is not suitable for my condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Q: <\/strong><strong>As a differently<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>abled person, what keeps you going?&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A: I always see myself as<strong> <\/strong>trying to reach above my eyesight. I network with everyone to keep ubuntu\/humanity ongoing.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Q: <\/strong><strong>Any word of advice to fellow employees who are differently abled?&nbsp;<\/strong><br>Don\u2019t be shy to alert people so that they know about your condition. This helps the world understand us.
